Did Susan Fiona Jane Mrs Reid and Mrs Taylor seem so smug and laugh as much after the acid attack?

In this rare case, I disagree with Pervy.  I found this story, particularly for 1950's Britain, quite realistic.  There are things David could have done to mitigate his crime:  He could have shouted around to see if the owner of the mac was near and would lend it.  Failing that, he could have left a note in the bike saddlebag with his name and address.  As to the punishment, I thought it fit the crime and did not get out of hand.  Both mothers were involved and it was clear that while the experience was meant to be humiliating, it was also meant to teach a lesson.  By explaining the situation to everyone, it was temporarily humiliating, but it also let everyone know David was not voluntarily dressing as a girl.  The girls were not overly cruel or sadistic, and this was helped by the fact that David took his punishment well and didn't whine and cry about it.  Finally, it worked!

The only thing I found out of line was the moms allowing the photos out of their control.  They knew the pics were taken, and I could see David's mom particularly wanting some as a keepsake.  (Can you imagine eight years later David bringing his fiance' home for the first time and Mom getting out the photo album.  :-)  However, letting the girls keep them with the potential for blackmail seemed a bit much.

Finally, I like happy endings and, although perhaps I am reading too much into the ending, it seems like they all became friends later and maybe under those circumstances, David came to enjoy going out dressed.  (Ok, maybe not, but I'm a happy CD, myself and can't help hoping.  Femininity is a gift that should be treasured and enjoyed, particularly by those not naturally endowed with it.  :-)

Jennifer,
Perhaps you would like to read my humble effort, entitled 'She Stoops to Conquer'. You may enjoy the raincoats which will be a prominent element of the story as it develops.

The girls' reaction is grossly out of proportion to the supposed
offence. It's pouring rain; there can obviously be no harm in
borrowing a mac in order to avoid being soaked. You would expect
some sympathy & understanding in such circumstances--especially
from the mother. Given such an irrational response, the story loses
all plausibility--at least, for me.

Dear Jennifer:
You wrote a delightful little morality play, well laid out and well thought out. The editing seemed OK till the 2nd chapter, where someone got confused over David/Jimmy. I hope Crystal will allow to to emend that one chip in an otherwisw nice plate of Petticoat punishment.
Perceptively, Jan

Nice story, good plot.

However there is one obvious mistake, at the beggining of the story our lad is called David and by the end of the story he is called Jimmy, would the author care to correct this.

The importance of reader feedback cannot be overstated.   Authors rely on it to improve their future works, and it gives them the incentive to write more stories if they know that their hard work has been appreciated.  I am not saying that comments must all be lauditory.  Authors often appreciate honest, constructive criticism over simple remarks like 'Great story', although simple praise is appreciated also.  There is no limit on how much you can enter in the 'comments' box.   Sentences will automatically word wrap at the end of the line so please do not use your carriage return/enter key except at the end of your paragraphs.
