The statment that he hated his grandmother is an anti-male seasoning by the author and a foreign attitude from a male child. At worst the kid would think 'eccentric (/read batty)' when his grandmother comes to mind. And that would NOT be inaccurate.

For example... I have (/had) and aunt Mae. She would always address me as robin rather than my given name robert. I attempted to correct her once to no avail. She didn't get upset with me she just didn't modify her actions. Now throughout my life sprinkled a few isolated incidents of razzing from different people about a femininity that I personally never felt was there. I resented much of those instances but I never hated my aunt mae nor did I ever take her faux paus' personally (and I never even thought she was batty like this kids grandmother). I just think the author is maligning this kid in order to portray an anti-male bias.

Now as for the mom... she is so much undeserving of the noble title. And it is the authors pen that has the kid being thankful in a very unrealistic way. I just know that if I were he that woman would never see me again regardless of my ability to adapt to what she so unfairly foisted on me.

The previous commentators should get a life. At first Terry's mother was  cruel but in the end Terri was satisfied with her life. I would rather be a woman than a guy and I would have hugged and hugged my mother if she had brought me up to be a woman. Thanks.

I would agree with the other comments - more so than any other story this is flawed - the ending is terribly rushed and lacks subtlety or reason - the entire motivation and characterisation of the mother is unconvincing  it shows an ignorance of Althzeimer's and mental illness in general, it is in short badly executed - the writing is fine  - I suppose but I would have to say that everything is so contrived, forced, and Deus Ex machina based that my belief suspension failed to launch completely.

I quite like some of Jennifer's stories but this is one of the worst, frankly it shows a contempt for the characters and the readers.

God! I have to agree with you Jesse! A good solid 40 wacks! This author seems to hate and revile everything.
She's up for anything! Child Abuse, White slavery, and lest we forget: She has her own ideas about crime and punishment. (let the criminals out and make sex slaves out of the good guys.) Okay! Now I know Jennifer has issues. The are probably neo-nazis and you!

Get a life Jennifer, or John, which ever you prefer. You need some serious therapy dear! Shock therapy! I can not believe that out of all that crap you put out there is not one with any redeaming qualities. You are aware that Hate is not empowering! It will destroy you.. Get some help! Please.

I'm glad to see there are others who see this kind of transformation as child abuse by a woman with mental illness.

I agree with the other comments. It's funny how Jennifer White ends the story with Terri saying how happy she is to be a woman - as though it justifies what was done to her.

What really is sad is that the father didn't investigate what was going on with the hormones.  A parent is supposed to take care of, and watch out for their children; even if it means going against the other parent.  Terry should get therapy, and one day let out what happened.  His mother deserves life behind bars ( and eternity in hell ) for what she did.  She medicated him without his knowledge, and without any medical oversight.  She destroyed his ability to have kids, before he was of age ( before he even had sex as a guy).  If grandma was actively involved, and had knowledge, then she should have the same punishment as the daughter.  I would suggest being locked in a cell block for the rest of their lives, and flood it twice a day to within 12" of the ceiling (8' tall).  They can swim for their miserable lives 1 hr per time twice a day in very cold water, until they get too weak and either die from a disease, or drown.  I'd also recommend a hysterectomy being done on them WITHOUT anesthesia.

A mom who would let her own mom believe her son was really her daughter for fourteen years is psycho anyway, so what she did was not out of character.  But I do hate it when the bad girls win.  Terri may think she's happy at the end of the story, but it wouldn't surprise me if at some point, perhaps when she's drunk some night, the part of her that's still Terry, the part burried deep, the part that's been screaming in hatred at the bitch who was supposed to love him but betrayed him and wrecked his life, rises up and does a Lizzie Bordon on mom and grandma.
