This is a well conceived and very well written story.  There is good character development, with the protagonist coming to grips with a changing society.

Please keep writing!

hi julia,

have u by any chance read oprah20033. this story is there in this very website n is very much similar except that there is no protogonist. but the way the transformation of boys n girls take place is very much similar.

now coming to the story. what is the use of having partners who cannot think. they are only baby-machines finally. it would have been nice if the women were dominant yet looked after the men in sucha way that men realised what mistake they had made in history.

anyway loved the way the transformations wer made slowly with regards to the clothes, make-up etc. all in all very enjoyable. sadly (n frighteningly) the world may end up like in a few decades. as i guy i would dread it. but the fashions nowadays seem to be heading in tht way.

Comment by Tiffany Taylor on 11/22/08
While I enjoy a lot of your other works this story seems to hate men altogether and I find that unacceptable.

I can see where this story could be a response to the scare that with modern technology women don't need men anymore but we all know that isn't true.  Both Men and women are needed in society and have always been needed.  Yeah males were a repressive bunch back in the day but a lot of that had to do with circumstances, and until technology has advanced to the levels to make those societal ideas no longer relevant it takes time to adjust.

I just find this world distasteful totally because in the end the women end up being no better then the men that ran the world for thousands of years.

With my distaste stated I'd like to also say that the story was well written and I had to finish it even though it bothered me.

I would just like to add my congratulations to those already sent on this brilliant story, which has indeed produced the most comprehensive outline of how a "role reversal" society might come about, and what that would lead to in the roles of men and women. The latter would be the leaders, political, professional, military and economic, with their "boys" reduced to the menial roles.

There was only one omission from the text which could have made it clearer; that is that the education of girls would have to be high-powered, while that for boys would concentrate on fitness for domestic life, as mothers and spouses, with some of the curriculum for necessary work skills, such as those needed to be a good secretary.

But, to finish, I can only say, well done!

I rather enjoyed the story and found the physical transformations the best I've ever read in a story like this.

However, I have to agree that it falls once against into full domination by women who literally just make men into brainless pawns. It also falls into sanitized culture.

Where is the variety of cultures that would see a different handling of male persons? Hispanic culture would handle the change much different from an Irish culture, or Chinese. Also it falls into the category of many of these stories where the woman is automatically a success. Even in a male ruled world, not 100% of men are successes. In fact a large number of them become Janitors, or Plumbers. Where is the female equivalent?

Basically this is a good start and actually inspired me to face these questions with good physical descriptions. But, it falls too into the old cliches of many stories that fell before it. Still, thank you for the inspiration. *Nods*

I must confess I liked the story a lot. OTOH I'd like more stories where women continue to bear children and have breasts and men don't.
Men could become subordinate, attractive, etc. without these changes.

Comment by Heather Alexander on 11/18/04
It is the best story i've have ever read on the theme of gender reversal.

The gauntlet has been thrown down.

A line has been drawn in the sand.

The bar has been raised.

In "Primacy", Julia Manchester has created the new gold standard in TG fiction. A thought provoking analysis of gender differences and so much more, this is the one Manchester will be long remembered for. This is her best work, and finest writing since, well... Ever.

And considering the quality of her other writings, you know that is not a statement to be taken lightly.

I can say with absolute confidence that "Primacy" is an important work in the realm of TG fiction, a towering achievement, and the first great story of the new century.

Comment by The Exposed Man on 01/01/04
As a fan of both science fiction and gender role reversal fiction, Primacy was truly a fascinating story.  It definitely takes the gender role reversal story to a new level.  I see it as kind of a reversal on the Stepford Wives theme.  The difference is that the Stepford Wives was a localized conspiracy where the women were turned into doting, slavish wives by a reversible mechanical process, Primacy has a worldwide conspiracy dooming the male sex to a future as slow-witted, big-titted slaves whose only two roles in life are as baby factories and as servants to their female masters.

The author has really taken a bold step and tackled evolution itself.  What took nature billions of years to accomplish, Julia Manchester has changes in a matter of decades.  The story is well-written with a very good flow to it (although the ending seems rather abrupt).

As an avid science fiction fan, I feel that the ultimate test of any story is “Do I believe this is possible?  Could this actually occur?”  I feel that on this basis, Primacy just doesn’t pass the test.

The scope of the conspiracy just isn’t believable.  For example, what is happening in other parts of the world while the United States is changing into a repressive matriarchy where men have all their basic rights stripped away.  Since the drugs are administered by injections, third-world countries would obviously not have anything resembling 100% compliance – after all, many of these countries don’t even provide immunizations to their children.  And what of the males who haven’t take mammeform, especially older males who would have no reason to take it?  Wouldn’t they notice what was going on and try to take some action?

At one point in the story, Lloyd is forced to wear skorts as part of a dress code.  No company would get away with a dress code unless the dress code was specifically to protect workers or was necessary for them to perform their job.  In this case it would seem to actually hinder their job performance since Lloyd had trouble walking while wearing his clothing.

One thing I wondered about was why Beth, portrayed as a heterosexual woman, would suddenly find a completely feminized Lloyd very attractive.  I could understand that the male population would adapt because they were brainwashed but why would female heterosexuals lust after feminized males?

The one aspect of the story that seemed totally unbelievable is that more than a few radical women would want the changes that ultimately occur in the story.  How many women would want a spouse so dull that they could not have a meaningful conversation with him?  Beth is portrayed as loving Lloyd but only occasionally having doubts about what has happened to him.  Essentially males who are mummified have been given a chemical lobotomy!

The reason Stepford Wives worked is that it was a small conspiracy – no one could have believed that all men would want wives like that.  This is precisely why Primacy ultimately fails the believable test.

Comment by pontius on 12/25/03
This story was excellent, but then at the end, it adds that the transformed males have also been partially lobotomized in order that they cannot form abstract concepts. Why this piece was added is very telling.  Without it, the story would have effectively made men experience the world from contemporary women's point of view.   It would be very intersting to see men inhabit essentially a feminine lifestyle.  To be human beings of the second sex, walking around without an external organ, only responding sexually when the woman seeks him out and lights his fires.   And then to experience sex in an essentially feminine way of surrender and ecstasy out of their own control.   ALL THAT WENT BEFORE IN THESE STORIES PREPARED THE WAY TO THIS POINT.  BUT THEN THE DELICIOUS MOMENT OF HAVING TO EXPERIENCE THIS ALL IS ROBBED FROM THE TRANSFORMED MEN BY THE TAKING AWAY OF THEIR MIND.  WHAT IS INTERESTING IN GENDER IS 'WHAT WOULD IT BE LIKE?'  TO CREATE CARICATURES THROUGH HYPNOSIS OR SLAVERY OR BRUTALITY IS BORING AND UNINTERESTING.  THIS STORY HERE HAD LABORED SO HARD TO MAKE THE MALES' EXPERIENCE DIFFERNENT THAN THE USUAL FAILED KINDS OF STORIES.  BUT, THE TALING OF THEIR MINDS DESTROYS THE EFFORT.
Would it not have been more interesting to see the transfomred males try to make their way in the new world with their penile sheaths and their empty crotches as they try to attract females, realizing that it is the women who have the equipment.  How does a man walk and act in sucha world?  Find a way to interact with the lordly women. This is the kind of premise to a story that I would like to see developed into a multi part story.  So much was done that was good here, keeping away from such perversities as dildo rapes and homosexuality. Why does the inventiveness of the author stop at this point?

Comment by TipsareAppreciated on 12/19/03
Enjoyed reading the story.  Kind of like a "Brave New World" take on the relative positions of the sexes.  I do wonder why so many gender role reversal stories end with men losing virtually all rights.  In this case it seemed particularly extreme - ultimately the male sex is doomed to being brainless, frightened beings who are little more than breeding receptacles.

"The human race made a large portion of their significant advances when women were finally permitted to make contributions. " <p>

The above claim in the preceding comment may sound good, but it just is not true.

Comment by StoryReader on 12/17/03
The story is very imaginative and very well-written.  I just wonder how anyone would be willingly choose to have their spouse be essentially mentally disabled.  Besides, ultimately the society would stagnate.  The human race made a large portion of their significant advances when women were finally permitted to make contributions.  That being said, I still found the story immensely enjoyable.

Comment by Reader on 12/14/03
I have to say that I actually enjoyed the story. The way everything was handled, made it seem like it could be real. But 2 personal problems

1. Bimbofication, although not outright, it exists here.

2. Even though I liked the story, I couldn't see past the "chicks with dicks", and the new males' places in life being so bleak, even as it is now, women have plenty of chances. I also think that I'd kill myself if I were in this universe...

Plus la change, plus la meme chose.

Very nicely written: plot, pacing, dialogue, emotional changes, supporting characters. Let's not forget to mention that extra ingredient: imagination.

A very nice tale of changing societal roles by changing physical attributes, with a little help from modern medicine and not neglecting the distaff side. Another chapter would have found Lloyd and Lane in mutton sleeves, pompadores, and bustles while Lonnie wrapped Beth around his little finger.

Very well done indeed.

Comment by cured on 12/13/03
This is the ultimate story in this genre.  There  can be nothing other than this.  It extends the premise of exploring role reversal and female authority to its limit while not turning into a caricature of the master -slave or brutal cartoons.

Because of this the stories also have a curative effect.  That illusory character of the myths that feminization could be a remedy for life's difficulties or that there is anything novel or unusual about females, is really what is revealed in this tale.  That may not be its intent, but that is nonetheless what is revvealed.

I have searched these sites for a story just such as this--where the people are not crazy submissives or brutal masters, but where gender is explored.  Sometimes the story leads to a conclusionjust where this story begins. Here, the situation is explored.  And that exploration is full-fledged in such a way that I could not require anyhting more concrete in story development.  Whatever in my unconscious wanted to see in such stories, is here developed and with the additional benefit that the result is that I no longer have a need to see some better story or some other approach./  There could not be a better approach.  So, sayonora you all.
