The story begins.

Major Winters sat at his desk and glared at the backs of the other clerks in the office. He was the only male employed in this office, a fact that he had become only too painfully aware of last week when he started. As the newest employee he had the lowest seniority and received all of the worst jobs in the office. Most people, upon hearing his name, asked him what he was a major of. He had long ago tired of telling people that it was his mother's idea because she thought that it would help him in life to have everyone call him Major.
Major Winters had graduated from business school just six weeks ago. This was not what he had in mind when he had enrolled in the curriculum. He had envisioned himself in the boardroom of a big corporation, but everybody had to start somewhere, he supposed. He was checking over the purchase requisition form for office supplies when his phone rang. A voice that identified herself as Mrs. Tompkins secretary informed him that he was wanted in Mrs. Tompkins office immediately. As he rose from his seat, he groaned silently and wondered to himself, 'What have I done now?'
