Major Winters, or 'Maj' (sounding a lot like Madge) wasn't very happy when he went home that evening. Not only had he found out that his co-workers found him stand-offish, but he ended up having to return to his work after a dressing down from his boss with a new nickname... a very effeminate nickname.
Nickname aside, the day had been exhausting. He had gone out of his way to be friendly, helping out with anything he could around the office. Jen, the woman in the cubical next to his, had spilled her coffee, and he sprang to his feet to help her clean up. Erica, the receptionist, was struggling with the photocopier, and he had quickly jumped to assist her. All this was difficult for him, as he usually just kept his head down and got his work done.
At lunch time he noticed a difference, as the ladies by the sink smiled at him, and were friendlier than normal. He had the feeling that if he wanted to, they would have allowed him to join in their gossip, but his shy character wouldn't allow him to go that far.
He sighed, dragging his feet to the bus stop. All he could think about was sitting in front of the television with a cold beer and a TV dinner. His exhausted mind just wanted to shut off for the evening. He dreaded what would come the next day.
