Chapter 4

Day 13- what are the next steps?

Davey was trapped impersonating his sister in her flat. He had slept fitfully after the previous evenings activities and awoke muggy headed and late. He padded around Barbara's flat in a short nightie and decided on a long hot bath to ease the aches from his feet (last night's dancing), his head (champagne) and elsewhere (!). He shaved closely and checked his body for stray unwanted hairs, but the previous weeks of waxing and creams had kept him smooth all over.

Dried off, he donned a pair of Barbara's cream panties and a matching bra, the makeup had come off his breastforms, so you could see the join, but they remained well adhered to his chest and he was used to their weight. A quick rummage in his sister's wardrobe revealed some lycra jeans and a soft camisole / jumper combination in light blue. He brushed his hair and fell into the routine of cleansers, moisturisers and a light mascara, eyeshadow, blusher and lipstick combination. Some pearl stud earrings and a simple gold rope necklace followed as he found some light sneakers which, whilst small for him, he could get to fit.

Barbara had said not to go out except for normal things, so he grabbed his clutch bag from last evening and emptied the contents onto the dresser, lipstick, compact, tissue, comb, credit card in Barbara's name and about £100 in cash. He looked for and found a simple shoulder bag, piled the essentials into that and grabbed last evening's outfit of shoes, bag and gown to take back to the couturiers.

Outside he hailed a taxi and returned to the dress shop, who were all agog at the newspapers which showed Davey on the fashion page, in Simon's arms under the headline, "Society partygoers surprised by diamond confusion". Davey grabbed and read the article,

"Amongst the revellers at the Hashimoro bank were Mr Simon deBrett and the stunning Barbara Norton in a beautiful blue organza gown. After a sumptious dinner the bank's president, Takashima Hashimoro gave a short speech and unveiled an empty case which should have, according to Hashimoro bank spokesmen, the largest diamond in the World (see Page 1 for details). The diamond was found later by police and is being examined for forensic evidence. Other surprised guests included Sir David Starkey and the Chancellor, Alistair Darling…"

Davey turned to the front page and scanned the main article, which gave a sensationalist but surprising accurate account of the "lost and found" diamond. The police seemed to be clueless as to what actually happened and "sources" close to the bank indicated a profound loss of face by the President who had been summoned back to Japan. There were also dark hints that the diamond may not be entirely what it seemed, an "expert" had informed the media that he doubted the diamond's authenticity.

Davey thanked the ladies for the gown and shot out to buy newspapers and essentials for the flat. Mindful of possibly being followed, he spent some time in a couple of clothing shops and walked out with a smart pair of pink sneakers to replace his sister's tight pair. He desparately wanted to speak to Caroline but was worried about implicating her and blowing his disguise; thinking quickly, he entered a Tesco and bought a few food items, slipping a new pay-as-you-go mobile phone pack into the basket.

Back at the flat, Davey followed the instructions and set up the 'phone. Concerned over surveillance, he then changed into the new sneakers, donned a long camel coat over the jeans ensemble, grabbed his handbag and went for a walk. In the busiest part of the local high street, he 'phone Caroline's mobile; she answered hesitantly,

"Hi, it's me,"

"Davey, where the hell are you, what's happening?"

"Caroline, I can't tell you as I don't know, you've seen the papers?"

"Yes and I was worried, what happened, and where are you calling from, this isn't your mobile number?"

"Can't explain except they seem to think Barbara is implicated in some way I don't understand. I'm being watched, hence the new 'phone and I can't go back to the old flat, I'm staying at Caroline's."

"I'll come over, I need to see you."

"No it may be too risky until this diamond thing sorts itself out." Davey spotted a well dressed Japanese looking guy across the street, "Must go, I'll call soon, love you". He hung up

He walked slowly back to the flat, stopping often to window shop but not seeing the Japanese man again. Once indoors and with little to do, he repeated the stretching and other exercises he could remember from the video, then sorted through Barbara's clothes, trying on outfits and shoes to see what fitted. He realised that he needed to get back to the other flat to get his clothes from there. It was then that realisation hit him.

"I'm impersonating my sister living as a woman 24/7. I have my own feminine clothes and not a stitch of male wear. The press have my photo in a blue gown on the arms of a man I made love to last evening and the president of a Japanese bank suspects my involvement in some scam concerning a diamond. I have a girlfriend who seems to understand my transvestism and a sister who has duped me and now disappeared." He thought, "but I've not felt so alive in years and I just love feeling like a woman." He glanced down at the rise of his breastforms and the elegant shape and colours of his painted fingernails. Then the flat's 'phone rang, it was Simon,

"Hi, listen, you up for dinner tonight? I've arranged for a delivery to you which should be there by now or if not, pretty soon to say thanks for last night and I'll pick you up from your flat at 8.00." He rang off, Davey's heart fluttered – what was he going to wear was his first thought, which made him grin as it was such a feminine response. Then the doorbell rang, it was a courier laden with boxes which, after signing for them in an approximation of Barbara's scrawl, opened to reveal his things from the flat. Delighted, he hung the clothes up and stashed the underwear and shoes, deciding on a simple but elegant black long sleeved dress with black court shoes and a simple black handbag. The dress needed ironing from its travels, so he flicked on the plasma TV and set about pressing the dress and other items which had got screwed up by the move.

The TV was tuned to the news channel which soon turned to the Hashimoro bank story. It seemed that Hashimoro himself had disappeared on arrival in Japan and that there was a run on the bank's stock, with an unprecedented takeover being considered. There was barely a mention of the diamond except that police forensic teams were still examining the evidence although the newsreader indicated that they were not sure if any crime was committed. One police spokesman mentioned wasting police time.

Hanging the dress and other items up, the phone rang.

"Miss Norton," it was Hashimoro,

"Yes Mr Hashimoro, it must be very late in Japan and how did you get my home number."

"That is of no consequence. I am calling to express my sincere apologies over the tone of our impromptu meeting last evening. I wanted you to know that there will be no charges pressed by the bank and any surveillance that you may have detected will be withdrawn forthwith. For the record, I have always enjoyed our competiton and I wish you good fortune in the future." He rang off.

Bemused, Davey used his new mobile to call Barbara. The number was out of order. He tried her work but they denied that Barbara Norton worked there. Now he was confused. With nothing better to do, he sat on the sofa and watched an afternoon movie and then showered and changed for his date with Simon.

The doorbell rang at 8.00, checking hair and makeup in the mirror, Davey opened the door to a smiling Simon elegantly dressed in a blazer and open necked shirt, he bent and kissed Davey, handing him a small bunch of red roses. Davey responded naturally, arms around Simon's neck, one high heeled foot raised behind him.

Davey quickly put the flowers in the sink basin with some water, grabbed his handbag and coat and, arm in arm, they went down to the waiting taxi. Davey went to speak but Simon held a finger to Davey' red ruby lips.

At the restaurant, a fancy European fusion place in Knightsbridge, they were shown to a small, private room. The table was set for 4 people, Davey looked wide eyed at Simon who just smiled and led Davey to a bar where 4 champagne glasses were filled. From behind another door, in walked Caroline looking stunning in a dark orange dress, Davey shrieked and covered her in kisses, Caroline pushed Davey off, smiling.

"Hi, Bro," Davey spun around to see Barbara shaking her hair out of a man's hat, she was wearing a double breasted pin stripe suit with a man's shirt tie and shoes. Davey ran over and kissed her, then went to slap her across the face, Barbara caught Davey's hand easily.

"Not until I tell you everything. My don't you look good, I bet Simon appreciated the effort you have made." Simon looked down at the floor and Davey blushed.

"I'm sorry for all of this, but let's first drink a glass of Champagne to Davey who, let's face it, is the best looking twin sister a girl could have." They chinked glasses and sat down, falling silent as a waiter brought the first course. Over the course of the evening, Barbara explained all that had happened;

"In simple terms, we, that's my bank, wanted to buy Hashimoro bank to get a foothold in the Japanese market and we knew they were struggling with liquidity, but Mr Hashimoro wasn't having any of it. We'd tried the normal channels and even had a few meetings but he was being inscrutable. Ms Tomi was on board with the idea but couldn't persuade her boss, so we hatched a little plan. You see the diamond was a fake, but Tomi managed to persuade Mr. Hashimoro to showcase it as a way of proving the financial probity of his bank; in fact their shares of International Mining are worthless. The board of Hashimoro were informed of this and they wanted to agree to our terms, but needed Mr. Hashimoro, who is a major shareholder, to step down. "

"So why did you need me?" asked Davey.

"Well, little sister," they all smiled, "the Hashimoro board demanded a meeting without Hashimoro himself being there. We knew he was coming to the UK for last night's extravaganza, and I had to represent my bank to the board in Tokyo – I couldn't be in two places at once and Mr. Hashimoro would have been suspicious if I was not at the ball."

"Who's idea was using me?" Davey was intrigued,

"The idea came up as we sought to create the diversion and tactics to get Mr. Hashimoro away. Tomi was all in favour as female impersonation is a very well respected profession in Japan. We didn't have much time once all was set up and, well, I didn't want to give you the chance to back out so we brought Caroline in on the act to help things along."

Davey cast a fearsome look at Caroline, who shrugged and grinned.

"Davey, you were even better than we hoped, you were magnificent and even Tomi, who knew what was happening, was taken aback by how good you were."

"So what happened to the diamond?" Davey was intrigued if a little annoyed at not knowing what was going on.

"Tomi took it off the dais once it was in place and hid it in Hashimoro's brief case in the room they dragged you into. During dinner, a diamond expert was ushered into the room by Tomi to appraise the stone, he confirmed that it was a fake and provided evidence to Tomi. They couldn't get it back on the dais before the unveiling, so Tomi managed to open the case after you left the room for the police to find it."

"So what is happening to Hashimoro?"

"The bank or the man?"

"Both"

"Hashimorosan was presented with the evidence of the fake diamond en route to Tokyo where he met with his board and offered to resign for loss of face. They accepted his resignation and acquired his shares for a lot of money, he is a rich man. We agreed terms this morning to acquire the bank and I flew back from Tokyo this afternoon!"

They paused as a waiter took coffee and bandy orders. Caroline excused herself to visit the ladies and Davey ran after her. They realised they couldn't chat in the toilets, but they air kissed each other, "love the dress, like to see what's underneath it." Caroline whispered.

Back in the room, Barbara and Simon broke from a passionate embrace. Simon excused himself saying that he needed to be at work the following morning and that the rest of the evening was girl talk anyway. They all laughed and all 3 women kissed, both Barbara and Caroline looking on quizzically as Davey kissed Simon a little too passionately.

After Simon had left, Barbara resumed the conversation,

"So, Davey, or whatever. I hear you've enjoyed being me and done a very successful job of it too. I was so envious of that fabulous evening gown and the photos of you in the newspapers are simply wonderful. Maybe we should talk about what's next for you, girl to girl." Barbara grinned,

"Before we do, I have been speaking to my bank and Hashimoro about the transaction. I will be named as the new CEO of their International division and Tomi will be president." There were squeals of congratulation and kisses all round. "The transaction should complete in about 3 months after shareholder approval and the normal legals. Once complete, I am authorised by the board to offer you, Davey, a significant sum provided that you agree to sign a confidentiality undertaking not to disclose what actually happened. That sum is half a million pounds!"

Davey gasped, "you don't need to worry, why would I spoil it for my sister. But I'll take the money anyway!" He smiled.

"Now, sis, you can't carry on being me I am afraid, that's part of the deal." Barbara looked Davey deep into his mascaraed eyes. "I'll give you 24 hours to decide what you want to do and you can keep the flat across town for the time being."

Davey looked across at Caroline, who nodded emphatically, "I'm not sure that I need so much time. These past weeks I have felt more alive, more energised and more certain of who I am, or what I am. Your kind offer means I'll be financially secure and, if she'll have me, I have found a woman to love." Caroline's eyes welled up as she nodded again,

"So, Barbara, my sister, will you be happy to have a sister instead of a brother?"

Barbara got out of her chair and embraced her new sister: through tears, they laughed as Caroline joined them for a three way hug.

Caroline broke her silence,

"we'll need to work this out Davey – I can't keep calling you Davey or Barbara for that matter. Whatever we call you, I know I love who you are and am getting used to what you are" Tears welled up and they all hugged again.

"How about I leave you two love birds to sort things out, the room and meal are paid for so feel free to stay unless you have other plans." Barbara grinned lasciviously, "I do, with Simon." She added with a wink, kissed them both and left with a parting:

"you can use my flat tonight and move out tomorrow."

To be continued…..
