The Silk Trail                by: Lisa Skye

Part 1

Nikki and Cindy went downstairs to let their moms know they would both be doing home schooling. But not before trying on a couple outfits each, of course. And another kiss or two. Hand in hand they entered the living room.

"Mom, I think I will come to Cindy’s school," Nikki said, and turned to Cindy’s mom, "as long as it’s still okay with you."

"Like I said, it will be better with two girls instead of just one," Karen replied. "But it won’t be all fun and games, girls. It’s still school and you have to do well."

"We will, " the girls said in unison. "We promise." Their moms had to smile.

"But it’s still summer for now, girls. Take off your heels and we’ll all get comfy on the couch," Linda said. "Let’s watch this movie. You two can sit in the middle." As they watched the movie, Nikki and Cindy slowly cuddled closer. Their moms saw and smiled at each other above the pair, unseen. Their daughters were adorable, two bundles of silk and lace snuggling together.

As they drove home, Nikki’s mom said, "I’m glad you decided to stay as my daughter, honey."

"Not as much as me, Mom!" Nikki said with a big smile.

"Does Cindy know now?"

"Uh huh. And she doesn’t care - she likes me like this! She’s real nice, Mom. And pretty, too!"

"Yes, we saw how well you got along, honey. You just remember, young lady, you two are only fourteen," Linda said with mock severity.

"Mom!"

"Just teasing, sweetie. But you remember that on your sleep over this weekend. If you two are kissing now, think how you’ll feel when you’re both in cute little nighties." She saw Nikki blushing. "But then again, you two were upstairs trying on outfits so I guess you’ve already seen Cindy in lingerie." Nikki was bright red now.

"Mom!"

Linda smiled. "Sorry, honey, but teasing about first girlfriends is a mother’s right. It says so right in the handbook." Nikki stuck her tongue out at her mom. "And remember to check your lipstick if you’ve been kissing," Linda added with a grin.

They rode in silence for a few minutes. "Mom, are me and Cindy really weird or something? I mean, she’s a real girl, and I’m a boy who wants to look like a girl. And now we’re girlfriend and boyfriend, or girlfriend and girlfriend, or I don’t know what. That’s not exactly normal, is it?"

"Do you want to be normal? Whatever that is." Linda paused. "Sweetheart, I can’t lie and say this a normal everyday situation because we both know it’s not. But that surely doesn’t make it bad or wrong in anyway. Sure, there are plenty of narrow minded people who won’t like you being a girl, and plenty who would think that I’m a horrible mom for letting you be one."

"No way, Mom. You’re great!"

"I’m glad you think so, honey. But the point is, that’s what matters to me. You. Not all those narrow minded people I don’t even know. You are what matters to me, Nikki. And you are happy being a girl, aren’t you?"

"You know it, Mom! Like I’m in heaven."

"And that makes me happy. And as I already admitted, I am very happy to have a pretty daughter now. I believe Cindy is happy with the way you are, isn’t she?" Linda asked, smiling. "Karen doesn’t mind a bit. So maybe this isn’t the most normal thing in the world, but it seems to be working for us."

Nikki smiled. "Yeah, I guess your right,"she said as they pulled into the driveway at home.

"It’s getting late, honey, so you go get in your nightie and go to bed," her mom said when they were inside. " And you think about what I said."

"I will," Nikki said as she kissed her mom goodnight. "Thanks, Mom."

When Nikki woke up the next morning she was in a happy mood. While she couldn’t really remember her dream she did have an image in her mind - herself and Cindy at the altar as two brides in gorgeous silk wedding gowns, smiling at each other. Wouldn’t that be just perfect?, she thought. I wonder if I should tell Cindy?

She went downstairs and was reading the comics with the TV on when her mom came down. At the moment they were showing the ruins in Greece.

Nikki heard the goddess Diane mentioned and she smiled. "You know Mom, they always show her in silky gowns and with a bow. I think in a little while I’ll put on a nice dress and practice some archery. The target’s still set up."

Linda smiled and shook her head. "You have a warped sense of humor, kid. Maybe this afternoon we’ll do some shopping. We’ll find you a perfect nightie for your sleep over."

Nikki grabbed a different section of the paper. "Look, they’re having a sale!" They both laughed.

"I guess if you’re going to stay Nikki all the time, we’ll need to get you some more clothes anyway. We’ll go after lunch."

"Okay, Mom. Are you going to come shoot some arrows with me? You can wear that white dress with all the lace, and I’ll wear my white silk blouse and white frilly skirt. It’ll be fun!"

"Why not, sweetie. Sounds like fun." As she poured herself a cup of coffee Linda thought, if Nikki had been born a girl, and liked things boy-things like archery but still liked wearing pretty dresses, everyone would think it was great. But as a boy who likes those things but wants to wear pretty dresses most people would think he’s sick. And me for letting him, let alone encouraging it. Oh well, that’s their problem.

They got dressed in white silky outfits and Nikki went through Linda’s jewelry box looking for the right earrings.

"Hey, Mom, I just had a good idea. If you get us some aerobic tapes we can get cute little exercise outfits with those little sheer skirts! We can exercise and dress cute! What do you think?"

"I think you’ll come up with any excuse for more pretty clothes. Try those earrings, they should go nice with your blouse. We’ll see when we get to the mall. Are you all ready now, Nikki?"

"Yeah, let’s go shoot some arrows." She looked like Cupid’s little helper, a bow in her hand and a quiver on her back, all dressed in white silk and lace.

Such a little doll, Linda thought, as she followed her daughter outside. I just love having a daughter.

This is so great, Nikki thought. I hope I never have to be a boy again!

The trip to the mall was a big success, at least in Nikki’s eyes. They found a couple pretty nighties so mom and daughter would match, and a really gorgeous one for Nikki to wear on her sleep over. Not only that, but really cute matching panties and strapless bra! Of course, she got a selection of nice matching panties and bras, and some stockings in different shades. And some more lacy slips. Then a few more nice silky dresses and some cute skirts and blouses. A few pairs of high heels. And they did get aerobic tapes and outfits (with the cute little sheer skirts, of course!). Then some earrings so she wouldn’t keep taking Linda’s. Quite a haul.

The next few days mom and daughter grew even closer. Linda taught Nikki how to do her make-up just right, and how to fix her hair. They were having a ball. They had always gotten along, but not like this. And Nikki hugged and kissed her mom more often now, and seemed more loving. Both were happy with the change.

"Now don’t you cause any trouble at Cindy’s house, sweetheart" her mom said as she drove Nikki to her sleep over. "I don’t want to hear that Karen had to hose you two down," she teased.

"Ha ha, very funny." Actually, Nikki was worried that she might embarrass herself in front of Cindy by getting too turned on when they kissed and cuddled. She smiled. I could have worse problems.

It was about four o’clock in the afternoon when they got there. Nikki and Cindy were going to watch the first three Star Wars movies. Their moms would watch the first one with them and order some pizza. Cindy was up in her room when they arrived so Nikki went up to get her.

While she was still in sight Linda loudly whispered to Karen, "That’s just so they can kiss without us seeing them," and they both laughed as Nikki went up the stairs a little quicker. A few minutes later they came down holding hands, and it was obvious they had planned their outfits. Both wore silky pleated skirts and silky blouses with long puffy sleeves ending in lace. Nikki had a sky blue skirt and pink blouse, Cindy wore a pink skirt and sky blue blouse.

"Don’t we have such adorable daughters?" Karen asked with a smile. "Two little dolls! Come on, girls, let’s start the movie. Linda and I will watch the first one, but then you’re on your own. We’ll order pizza in a little while."

They gathered on the couch, Nikki and Cindy in the middle, holding hands.

After watching all three movies the girls were feeling a little sleepy. But it was way too early to go to bed yet! A short walk outside helped a little. Then they each took a shower to finish waking up. Nikki made Cindy go first so she would get to show off her new nightie last.

"Oh my god, Nikki! You’re adorable!" Cindy gushed. The nightgown was white silk, floor length with a slit up the middle, and spaghetti straps. It had lace along the bust and hem, and small pink and yellow flowers embroidered on the bodice. Nikki giggled as she sashayed into the room and spun around like she had seen models do.

"Isn’t it pretty? I have a cute sheer dressing gown that goes with it, too."

"Oh, kiss me, pretty girl," Cindy said as she gave Nikki a big hug.

They sat on the bed. "Can I ask you something, Nikki? I don’t want to embarrass you or anything. But how long have you wanted to be a girl?" She quickly added, "I’m glad you are," and gave Nikki’s hand a squeeze.

"I’m not really sure," Nikki said with a shrug. "Since I was real little, I guess.

" The first time I dressed up I was about seven. I was playing with the little girl next door where we used to live while my mom was at work. Lisa was her name. Her mom would usually watch me when my mom wasn’t home. Me and Lisa were playing Candyland in her room.

"We were sitting on the floor playing and I was facing her open closet. I had been admiring her dresses and near the end of the game I said, ‘Wow, you have a lot of pretty dresses, Lisa.’ She was my best friend, and I didn’t think she would laugh at me. I probably wasn’t even thinking when I said that anyway. She didn’t act like I’d said anything wrong.

"In fact, she said, ‘I bet you could be a cute girl! After the game’s done, wanna play dress up?’ Of course I wanted that more than anything but I just calmly said okay and took my turn." Nikki paused and looked thoughtful. "You know, I can’t remember who won the game."

Cindy smacked her playfully on the arm. "Nikki!"

Nikki grinned. "Anyway, after the game she got out two frilly dresses, one pink and one blue. She said I was the ‘boy-girl’ so I would wear the blue one, and she was the ‘girl-girl’ so she would wear the pink one. I shyly asked if I got to wear girl undies too. She got me lacy blue panties and blue tights, and even a really lacy blue slip. ‘Everything matches!’ Lisa said. Even then my hair was kind of long, and as soon as I got dressed I was a cute little girl.

"She promised not to tell anyone and I don’t think she ever did. She moved when I was thirteen. And we played dress up the whole time until she moved. Then I started secretly wearing my mom’s clothes. She finally found out and now I get to be Nikki!"

"And I’m so glad you are," Cindy said, hugging her.

"Not as much as I am!" Nikki’s smile faded just a little. "I really don’t know what’s going to happen, but for now I get to live as a girl. I hope I can stay this way forever. But I really don’t know." A memory popped into her head and the smile came back strongly. "I had a real nice dream last night, Cindy. I don’t really remember it, except the end part right before I woke up."

"Tell me."

Nikki blushed. "Um, we were getting married. But we were both brides. It was so pretty!"

"Wow, that does sound nice. Who knows?" She smiled at Nikki and Nikki gave her a kiss.

"Yeah, you never know. Cindy, did you ever know a ‘girl’ like me before?"

"No. And to be honest, if someone had told me about you, I don’t know what I would have thought. But when I met you I just thought you were a girl. A cute girl. Then you told me, and somehow, it just seemed right. I don’t know how else to put it. Does that make me weird?"

"You didn’t hear the talk me and my mom had. That’s what I was saying to her. And we even have visual aids now. Come with me." Nikki took Cindy’s hand and led her to the big mirror. "Okay, now look at us."

Cindy whistled. "We’re a couple of babes," she said with a laugh. She kissed Nikki. "And I mean it!"

"I’m not disagreeing," Nikki said, smiling. "But you can hardly say we’re boyfriend and girlfriend when I look like this."

"No, no, no - you’re my girlfriend, and I’m yours. Girls can have girlfriends, it just means something a little different this time. I’ve never kissed a girl like this before, and never really wanted to either. And I hope you don’t find it in anyway an insult Nikki, but I only think of you as a girl."

"Not at all," Nikki said, hugging Cindy tightly.

"Good." She gave Nikki a quick kiss. "My girl."

"And you’re my girl."

"Yes I am," Cindy said, as they kissed again. They looked at each other and both started giggling. They fell on the bed laughing. "Okay, I guess if I’m weird at least I have you being weird right along with me. And to be honest, we’re both too cute to be weird," she said with a smile.

"Right!" Nikki agreed.

"And we’ll be even cuter tomorrow. Mom’s taking us to the Glamour Shots place. We’ll get make-overs and dress up in fancy clothes, then get pictures taken. It’ll be great!"

"I always wanted to go there. Of course, I couldn’t say that til recently! I want to wear a really silky and lacy gown."

"Me too. Hey, maybe they’ll have wedding gowns. We could be your dream! Wouldn’t that be great?"

"It would, but I doubt they’ll have wedding gowns. But I’m sure we’ll find something good!"

They chatted a little more, but soon it was time for bed. After a tender goodnight kiss, the two little angels soon fell asleep, still holding hands.

As they were walking towards the photo place the next day, they peeked in the stores they passed by. Looking in a jewelry store window, Nikki stopped.

"Can we stop in here real quick? Look at that locket in the window there. I want to get one for Cindy that says "Nikki" inside."

"Oh, you are so sweet!," Cindy said, giving Nikki a quick hug. "Can we Mom? Please?" She turned back to Nikki. "Is it okay if I get one for you? Then we can both wear them."

"I’d like that. It’s okay with me."

"Alright, girls. But just that - no looking around. They should be engraved by the time we leave from your glamour shoot."

They had no wedding gowns at Glamour Shots, but they did have lots of outfits to choose from. They got one picture done in cute can-can girl dresses, showing their frilly petticoats. Then Nikki wore a pink gown and Cindy wore a light blue gown, just for fun, both silky and loaded with lace. Finally in the outfits they came in, white skirts and lacy white blouses.

"Wow," Nikki said as they left, "that was so cool! Maybe we can come again on my birthday, Cindy. It’s just next month - I’ll talk to my mom." They stopped to get their lockets, and both girls quickly put them on. Heading back to the car they had to stop for traffic.

Cindy read a poster on the wall and nudged Nikki. "Look at this." There was going to be a fancy dress summer dance. "Might be fun. But I don’t know if they’d be ready for us."

"Probably not. A shame too. I bet it would be nice. Imagine, slow dancing with us both in long silky gowns. I bet that would be real nice."

"Oh Nikki! Now I really want to go."

"What’s wrong, girls?" Karen asked.

"Oh, we were just looking at this poster for a dance and thinking how nice it would be if we could go."

"Why can’t you?"

"Nikki and me, on a date - Mom, wake up."

They hadn’t noticed a girl who walked up behind them. "Hi. Are you girls going? It’ll be fun. My name’s Leslie."

"Hi, I’m Cindy and this is Nikki."

"Hi. We were just talking about it."

"It’ll be great. And I can get my mom to buy me a new gown. My boyfriend hates wearing a suit, but that’s too bad. Are you going?"

Nikki and Cindy looked at each other. "I don’t think so," Nikki said.

"Why not? It doesn’t matter if you don’t have dates. It’s still fun. And everyone gets all dressed up. Why aren’t you coming?"

Nikki noticed th traffic clearing so they could go, so he leaned over to Leslie and whispered to her. "I’m really a boy, and Cindy and me are girlfriends." She smiled at Leslie and followed the others to the car.

Leslie followed. "Really? Wow! But why aren’t you coming to the dance?"

All three stopped in their tracks and just looked at each other. They turned back to Leslie. "You did hear what I said, right?" Nikki asked.

"Sure," she said, nodding. "Kinda hard to believe, though. You sure look like a girl to me! But who cares. And hey, you are a boy and a girl, so no one can complain about that. Why don’t you come?"

"You’re serious?" Cindy asked.

"Yeah. Think about it, at least."

"We will. Bye, Leslie." They all said goodbye and got in the car.

As they drove home, Cindy asked, "What do you think, Mom? Do you really think it would be alright for me and Nikki to go to the dance?"

"That’s up to you. And remember, I’m sure Leslie doesn’t speak for everyone. But it’s okay with me. Nikki will have to ask Linda if it’s okay with her.

The girls just looked at each other. They wanted to go. But could they really go, as a couple?
