Part 01: Shopping Square

Synopsis: Near Burlington Vermont is a quiet town. In that town is a very old Square. In this story we talk about what is going on on the surface. (A part of the Sharla Winslowe Universe)

Margaret was very glad that she was just the coordinator of the "Raven Square Arts and Antiques Festival." The Festival had been started three years ago, as a Craft Sale and antique exhibition on the Square and an area flea market in the parking lot and park on the south side of the square. The coordinator's job was a snap and took no where near the time as Director.

Sheila Carstairs had been asked to chair the planning committee. Just how the Coven members had managed to twist the arm of that "Independent Elder of the Coven" and Madam High and Mighty Sheila Carstairs to be responsible for boosting it every year as Director was anyone's guess. Yet, somehow they had, over time, managed to get her and she had driven the system or whatever until now they had fifty-five major antique dealers and almost seventy major craft and folk art marketers booked this year. The Activity had grown from a Saturday afternoon three years ago, to a full week with major symposiums being held at the town arena and almost a constant rotation of people selling at the flea market. There had also been a small carnival that had booked for this year.

Yessir, I'm damned glad I'm just the coordinator!

And now, I've got these crazy "wanna-be" magicians to contend with... Margaret O'Malley was no stranger to Magic. She was a member of two different Covens plus being a Member of the Research Coven in Maine. This last group of Artisans wanted to set up in the Flea Market section and sell Magic Charms. Based on her knowledge, the type of charms represented would be favoring black magic.

The Charters that the Society of the Sisters of the Raven Square had obtained from the City, the County, and the State to operate this program here on the Big Raven Square, the parking, and park next to it required no restrictions based on culture or religion. She decided to get Janet Wainright down here to see if they could do something to neutralize the effects of the black magic charms.

Thirty minutes later Janet Wainright caught up with Margaret and told her, "Maggie, I've talked with those demonic users and they are pretty adamant that there is nothing of any great concern,"

"Janet, you may get away with spouting tripe like that with others, but this old girl is not some novice. You're talking to me, an old friend, Jan… I know those talisman are and I know the dark powers as well as anyone…"

"Mags, I want you to just go one about your business and make The Year 2000 Fair the best ever. Be sure everyone that counts gets the word there's a storm brewing and be certain their product is well covered tonight. Can you do that for me?"

A knowing smile curled Margaret O'Malley's lips. "Yeah, I can do that." The woman went back to her duties, satisfied the Dark one had again been thwarted.

The End of Part 01, Year 1, the Raven Square Story, in the Sharla Winslowe Universe – Part 02 next.
