The Summer Tony Never Expected      by: Gail F Symon   symon64@mindspring.com

part :2

The phone call home only served to complicate things in Toni’s mind. There was a great desire to go home and show them her (his) grades in person. Toni knew how much doing well in school would mean to them. But this meant doing something with her hair, and then there were the long nails. Well even the thin arched brows might be explained as being from the drama class. "Let’s see, I’d need some slacks, a shirt, some socks and shoes...........

But on the other hand, I’ll be spending a lot of money for one or two days."

Toni finalized her decision when she checked with the Bus company. From school to the town where Robert lived was only a 3 ½ hour bus ride. And with the student discount it was less than $60.00. But the trip home and then to Robert’s would cost over $250.00. That settled it: it would be straight to Robert’s! The bus leaves at 2:40 each day. She would go tomorrow, Tuesday.

As Toni started back to her residence, the quietness of the campus area allowed her to think. Almost gone was that nagging fear of being recognized (read) as not being a girl. Only the occasional person passing, smiling and saying hello broke her thoughts. What to say to Mrs. Wilson. After all she had gone to town to purchase some clothes to go home in and here she was returning in the skirt and blouse. Maybe it was time to tell Mrs. Wilson the whole story. She’ll understand. She did say something about helping other guys dress up.

"Get everything done you needed to?" Mrs. Wilson asked as she entered the house.

"Well, ya.....just about.......ah.....I talked to my folks and what with the bus fares and all I guess I’m gonna go straight to the Franklin’s. The bus leaves here at 2:40 every day so I’m leaving tomorrow. Is staying here one more day OK?"

Toni was asked how (his) folks felt about this and Toni explained how they knew how important the job and money were. If (he) would have a car, visits home could be more frequent. Besides children eventually break away from home and begin their life. They knew that someday Tony would move to where their was greater opportunity. Now came the hard part for Toni. "Mrs. Wilson, there’s something about this summer job I didn’t tell you or my parents. I,......it’s like this.........I.....they ah............"

"They think you’re a girl don’t they."

"Yes Mamm"

"And their son Robert never told them any different"

"No, it just all happened so fast. And then with the other girls and all. They just stepped in and to them this is they way it should be and that was it. It was like first jumping out of an airplane and then asking if you had a parachute. They had made decisions for Robert and for me". Toni then went on to explain in detail, almost word for word the conversation she had with Robert’s parents.

"Well child, judging from how you looked in that dress I can see how they came to the conclusion they did. Even Betty yesterday didn’t question what you were. Well, how do you feel about this? Have you told your parents all the details of your summer job?"

"Most everything"

"And............what did we leave out?"

"You know........how I’ll be working."

"You mean as a girl."

"Yes"

"Most important, how do YOU feel about this. From what I gather you’ve been dressed since Friday. You’ve slept overnight with girls your age, you’ve attended a party, met many people and last night you went out with 2 elderly women. Were you uncomfortable with yourself like this? Toni was asked.

"We at first, well.......I guess. But the girls were all so nice and they were fun to be with......I mean how they were and how they treated me. And then before the party when we went shopping, well it was kinda fun. I even picked out some of the things. And then at the party, I had a good time. I looked as good as any girl there."

"Are you just doing this cause they coaxed you into this" Toni was asked.

"................No..... I kinda enjoyed the part in the play. I wished it could have been bigger........... I was glad for the girl’s help............. I guess I coulda just gone home anytime,..........and I didn’t"

Toni was becoming comfortable discussing his situation with Mrs. Wilson. She felt that somehow Mrs. Wilson understood all this and it wasn’t merely a college prank.. Noticing how at ease Toni was, the suggestion was made that they freshen up and they would go out to dinner together. Now, feeling entirely at ease, Toni went up, sorted through the suitcase, selected another blouse and skirt and after some repair of the hair and makeup went back downstairs. This was a learning experience for Toni. She realized this was something she would be doing on a regular basis for the next 3 months. And there were no ‘girls’ around to help. She had much to learn.

The 4 block walk to the restraunt was a pleasant one. With most of the students gone, there was a quietness that didn’t exist during the school year. At the restraunt there was plenty of space and they were able to choose a table away from other patrons. During the meal Toni remembered the pills she had gotten and took the vial from her purse. Laying two pills on the table Mrs. Wilson asked, "Toni, what are those for? I’ve never known you to take anything."

"One of the girls gave me these...........said they will help my skin......said she’d send me some more......told me she takes them all the time."

This last statement confirmed the suspicion Mrs. Wilson had. "If those are what I think they are, they will do more than help your skin. Those look like birth control pills - which are hormone pills for women. Those are usually prescribed by a doctor."

But by the time she had finished her sentence Toni had washed them down with some water.

"Before you take any more you’d better be sure what your taking and what they’ll do" Mrs. Wilson added.

Toni simply nodded affirmative but thought if they help any she would still take them. The conversation then shifted to school matters, the success this year, what would be taken next year and what would happen after school was over. Both were surprised that it was after 9:00 PM when they got home. They said their good nights and retired for the evening.

In the morning Toni dressed in the blouse, skirt and flats she had worn the previous day. It was early and after a light breakfast said ‘Good Bye’ to Mrs. Wilson, thanked her for everything and left early. After the difficulty she had with her hair that morning she had decided to visit the beauty shop and have it ‘fixed up’ like they did it before. The ticket was bought at the bus depot, the suitcase checked and then it was 2 blocks to the shop.

The woman who originally worked on Toni was surprised to see her and dressed up too!

"What’s up Hon, how can I help you?"

"Can you fix my hair up like you did it before? You know so it’ll last a while?"

The woman was a bit puzzled but answered "Sure, what’s the big occasion?......another party?"

"No.......I gotta go........well it’s like this" And as the woman shampooed Toni’s hair and was setting it in rollers, Toni in a round about way told her the events of the last 4 days.

"You mean these people don’t know that you were just dressed up for the party and they offered you a job,.....and your going to stay with them for the summer?

Toni simply replied "yes" and then added " it all just got so carried away. "Robert didn’t say anything and they had already offered the stuff about helping him study the next year and well I just went along with everything."

"Do you think you can fool them the whole summer?" the woman asked.

"Well if you go to work at Burger King they give everybody the same uniform and all the help looks alike. Besides I’ll be staying in a separate place and won’t see them to much and Robert will be there." Toni then added that she had actually enjoyed the past few days. "I even went to dinner with my housemother and her friend."

Toni was very pleased with the results and felt it was worth the $12.00. It was an hour and one half until the bus so Toni stopped in the drug store, picked up 2 magazines, one car and one woman’s day, and went to lunch. She getting used to hearing the "yes miss, can I help you" and no longer looked around as if they were referring to someone else. After a light lunch, she called the Franklin’s and told Mrs. Franklin she would be coming in on the bus at 6:20 today. She was told someone would pick her up and to wait. At 2:50 the Bus left. Toni had begun her Summer adventure.

The bus trip was uneventful. With only a dozen or so people Toni had the double seat to herself. She tried reading the magazines but thoughts about the summer kept breaking the reading concentration, There were the questions the shop operator had asked; the ones Mrs. Wilson had asked. Toni answered these in her mind with ‘Well, No one laughed or thought anything the few days I was around school. Not even the girl in the office at school.’ And then she would go back to the car magazine and wonder "I hope I can save a bunch of money and get something sharp-Boy anything will be better than that old pickup of Dads"

At 6:00 the Bus pulled into the terminal. Toni got off and looked around. She was stunned by the size of the terminal. The Bus had pulled into a spot between several other buses; there were people everywhere. "Miss,.....Oh Miss............Here’s your bag" She was startled as the driver pushed the bag towards her. She picked it up and looked around for Robert, or the Franklin’s. The crowd was overwhelming. Finally she saw Robert and his mother. Mrs. Franklin greeted her with a hug, Robert said "Hi Toni." "Well Robert, get her bag" Mrs. Franklin yelled at Robert. It was obvious that Robert wasn’t going to pick the bag up at first but reluctantly did so. As they walked away with Robert trailing, Mrs. Franklin said "Robert has no manners, maybe you can teach him some" During the ride home Toni was asked about her parents and about the trip there. Toni simply said they were fine and were happy about the job, adding the bus ride was better than ‘riding squished in Dads pickup.’

The Franklin’s house was a large 2 story Georgian brickhome, A screened breezeway connected to a 3 car garage. It turned out the guest house was a large efficiency style apt. behind the garage. It was one large room with a very large connected bath containing a separate shower and tub. A full mirrored vanity with 2 sinks completed the fixtures. Toni was happy. She would be away from the family and have privacy. The big room had several easy chairs, a couch, a very large table, a TV and on the wall opposite the bathroom, a stove, sink and a fridge. The long wall opposite the garage wall was all windows except for a sliding glass door. It was obvious this area was meant as a supplement to Garden Parties as well as guest quarters.

"Have you eaten child?" Mrs. Franklin asked.

"Lunch Mamm, at school" Robert’s Mother then said she would go up to the big house and fix her something adding "Why don’t you freshen up and Robert will come and get you when things are ready. You can put your things in that wardrobe cabinet there" as she pointed to a large cabinet. Toni was in awe as she opened her suitcase. Overwhelmed by everything, she started laying out the contents of the suitcase. To her surprise she found 2 dress’s, some skirts and blouses, the nighty she had worn back in the girl residence as well as some other lingerie. Toni breathed a sigh of relief when she saw the selection of clothes. There would be enough to get by she assumed. Her thought were broken by a knock on the door. It was Robert.

"We Toni, you did it. I wasn’t sure you were gonna come. I sure hope you know what your doing. My folks mentioned you over and over . If they ever find out, we could both be in big trouble"

"Look, you just do what ever you have to do and I’ll do whatever job your Dad gives me. You can stay away from me all summer if you want" Toni replied "But you could act a little more civil around your folks. After all we are supposed to be friends."

When they arrived at the house there was 2 places set at the dining room table. The Franklin’s informed Toni they were going out for dinner but "you and Robert can eat together. He’ll show you around. Mr. Franklin asked that you be up early so you can go in to the office with Him and Robert. He leaves just before 8:00 AM"

With no one else in the house Robert and Toni were free to talk. Over supper Robert again expressed his concerns. Toni responded by relating how she felt about everything. "I’ve kinda got used to wearing skirts and it isn’t so bad. In fact I’ve enjoyed the experience so far and I’m gonna make the best of it" When they were done Toni cleared the table and went in and rinsed off all the dishes. This was something she had done for his mother all her life. Toni related the discussion she had with Mrs. Wilson. When Robert asked if she had told her folks, Toni replied "No, not yet" Then Robert walked with her back to the guest house, showed her how to pull the couch out into a bed, said good night and left. When Toni moved some toiletries to the bathroom she noticed a note with instructions taped to a jar. Use this cream to remove make-up Never soap Toni set the clock and went to sleep. Reality awaited her.......

Toni was up early. She looked at the clock, 6:35.....lots of time. The nightgown felt good and Toni found it easier to sit when going to the bathroom. She cleaned her face with cream and rinsed it with cold water. It still felt a bit strange to be putting on a bra, panties and a slip but she was getting used to it. A peek into the fridge. Nothing but a new container of O.J...... Pills, got to take pills.......... Got to find out about these somehow. Then dressing in a casual black skirt and a blue short sleeve blouse , she looked in the mirror. "I sure this will be OK. It better be. All there is are casual clothes."

Upon entering the kitchen of the main house Toni was greeted by an older woman, obviously a cook. She spoke first. "I’m Anna, I cook for the Franklin’s. You must be the young girl from the College. I was told you’d be staying in the guest house"

"Good morning. I’m Toni,....Toni Summers. I’m a classmate of Robert’s."

"Well sit down in the dining room and I’ll bring you breakfast."

"Could I just have some cereal here in the kitchen? And some coffee?"

"I think it would be better if you ate with the Franklin’s in the dining room" Anna said slightly forcefully.

Toni went in and sat down at the table and was soon joined by Mr. and Mrs. Franklin. Everyone said their "Good Mornings" and then Mr. Franklin asked if Toni was ready for her first day. Without waiting for an answer, he continued on and explained where she would be working and what she probably would be doing. "My office manager will have the final decision on that. But based on what Robert Told me about background and how good you were in math, you’ll probably be working in the accounting Department" Everyone was just about done eating when Robert finally joined them. It was mentioned to him that ‘his guest’ had been on time!

It was a 30 minute drive to the office complex where the Franklin’s had their main office. Mr. Franklin took Toni in and introduced her to the accounting Department Head, Mrs. Janet Fisher. There was some discussion about putting Toni on the payroll and what her pay was to be. When Toni heard the $8.00/hr figure she was stunned. Her mind wandered as they talked, "8 times 40 that’s 320...... times 10 weeks that’s 3,200 dollars. I could save over 2,000 dollars by fall." Her quiet thoughts were broken when Janet turned to Toni and said "well lets get the paperwork on you done and we can get you started on the job." Robert, who had been just standing in the background just said a ‘good bye’ to Toni as he left with his Father.

The usual employment forms were filled out and then Janet took Toni around to the various departments making sure she was introduced as a "Summer Employee who was hired by Mr. Franklin." This reference only added to Toni’s self consciousness who had begun to feel a bit uneasy about her casual dress. As she had looked around, she had noticed how ‘dressed for work’ everyone was, especially the women who were all in heels with dress’s or suits. She felt she stood out at a time she had wanted to blend in as was the case on campus. She even felt a bit envious of how nice they looked.

By noon Toni had settled in at her desk had been given some routine filing tasks. Janet came around, informed Toni it was lunch time and invited Toni to join her as she went out to a small diner. There were the usual questions about Toni’s background and family which Toni answered very truthfully, tactfully omitting references to a male background. Janet mentioned what a wonderful opportunity this was then, working with a company, gaining experience, even the fact that "Your being exposed to the real world, not a local business." In the weeks to come, this conversation would prove to be a break for Toni, because her lack of knowledge about the feminine world would be excused. To put it bluntly, she was a hick from the country in the eyes of some.

Toni easily survived the rest of the work week and was shocked when Janet came around at mid-afternoon with a paycheck. Toni was thankful as her funds were just about gone. The problem now was where to cash the check as her account was in Tony’s name and the check read Toni. During the ride home Toni fibbed and said she had closed her account on campus and didn’t know what to do. Robert mentioned he wanted to cash his check also so they stopped at the local Bank and with Mr. Franklin’s endorsement Toni cashed her check. When they arrived home Toni discovered that the Franklin’s were going out to a club to eat. A roast had been fixed and she and Robert could eat at home.

After supper Robert and Toni spent the evening in the living room telling each other about the work they were doing. Robert was working in one of the Franklin’s stores just being exposed to sales, inventory and general merchandising. Toni was doing filing and account posting for all of the Franklin interests. At no time did the discussion turn to Toni’s situation. It seemed that Robert was just becoming accustomed to Toni and her new persona. And in a small way was even treating her as a girl. He even relayed a compliment his Father had made. It seems that Mrs. (Janet) Fisher had mentioned how well Toni was learning her work and how consencious she was. What nobody realized was that this ‘stay at the desk and work’ was really the result of Toni just being scared.

Saturday morning inquired how to get to some stores and the library. There was a bus line 2 blocks away and the 7th stop was at a small center. The library was in the center of town. And after some juice and a bowl of cereal Toni ventured out on her own.

Her first stop was the library in town. It took very little time to track down information on hormones. Estrogen, Progesterone, Testosterone. There was a book by a Benjamin, Harry, but it was out. The research section clerk directed her to a computer station and the Internet. "May I ask what your specifically looking for?" she asked.

"Oh a friend of mine at school is taking these pills and someone told her they were bad for her. I just wanted to find out what they could do to a person" Two hours later Toni had information, not everything but a general idea and several places to write or get on line to get more. For now writing would have to do.

Secondary sex characteristics; that was the main theme. If males took female hormones they could develop these characteristics. To what degree depended on the person. The skin would become softer in appearance. Well this wasn’t so bad, that’s just what the girls said. Fatty tissue would be redistributed, to hips and bust but only after a lengthy period of intake. Summer wasn’t a lengthy period, she reasoned. She would continue to take them. She copied the names of the pills mentioned. Now it was shopping time.

The shopping area was an open mall that had about 10 stores, one of them a small sandwich shop. She was startled by the waitress asking "Could this lady join you at your table? We’re very crowded and......"

"Sure....Hi I’m Toni......." The woman, in her 60’s was very thankful any expressed "How good it was to sit." In a way Toni was happy to have some company. She felt comfortable having a conversation with this woman as they sat and ate. Toni explained she was a student , did not live in this area but was here working for the summer. With each social encounter, Toni became more and more comfortable with her situation. In the beginning it was a Tony who was doing this but now after a week Toni was explaining how SHE was the one working for the summer. Tony’s experiences were now Toni’s life.

The shopping trip included the grocery store, the drug store, especially the make-up section, and a small dress shop where she saw a dress she liked but balked when she saw the price. It was 4 double bagged purchases she took home with her on the bus. Not unlike at school, she had purchased enough for breakfasts and snacks for the week. She would also make a lunch to bring to work. She did make a promise to herself that she would shop for heavy items like milk and soda during the week. Four bags were just too heavy for the bus.

She had been home about an hour and one-half when Robert knocked. "I’ve got some cokes, want one?" "Sure"

Then Robert asked, "How about a show tonight? Mom said she’d give us a ride after supper. I’d drive but ....ah....I had some tickets and my license got suspended last fall. I can’t get it back until about Thanksgiving. And even then the insurance will be so high, half of what I earn this summer will go to pay for it."

"No wonder your Parents figure you need a keeper. Well I’m not gonna be that. I’ll help you study and like that but that’s it!"

"No ones asking you to be that. Well anyway. you wanna go to the show?"

"OK but I pay my own way."

"Be that way, I just thought it would be nice to do something together."

"Yah, OK, I do kinda miss doing stuff like at school too."

The rest of the day was a matter of fact time: Mrs. Franklin inquired about Toni’s job and how she liked it so far, Toni and Robert went to the show, stopped for a late night snack and came home in a cab. But somehow the edge between them vanished during the evening, and by late evening they were joking about things in the movie, some incidents back at school and were even holding hands as the walked down the street. But back home they each went to their respective area with just a simple "see ya".

Sunday had always been Tony’s washing day and so it was with Toni. She inquired and was told where the washer and dryer were. The afternoon was spent re-organizing her things and writing a letter home. As she reread the letter she couldn’t help but notice the positive attitude she had expressed. "Mom and Dad will be happy when they read this" she thought to herself.

Toni began the new week at work with far more confidence. The previous weeks paycheck was part of the incentive but also was the confidence she felt about herself and about the job she had. No longer was she just the special employee hired by Mr. Franklin. They had begun to realize she was a good worker who paid attention to he job but was a rather quiet, friendly girl who minded her own business. They had experienced working with Robert for part of the previous summer and had kind of expected the same from Toni. Robert had evidentially rubbed everyone the wrong way with his attitude. And as the week passed, everyone warmed to Toni more and more. She would take breaks and eat her lunch with several of the women.

Thursday proved to be a big day for Toni. Upon arriving home after work she found 2 parcels in the breezeway. Both were from girls at school and contained clothing. "They remembered" Toni exclaimed when she discovered them. Opening them would have to wait till after supper. It was at supper that Toni had her second surprise. During supper Mr. Franklin mentioned he had gotten some good reports about Toni from Janet. "She’s quite impressed with you. Tells me you learned your job quickly and you don’t waste time. Very good". He brought up the subject of Toni’s desire to work and earn money for a car this summer. "Our neighbor down the block owns the agency where we get our cars and I called him today and asked if he had anything a college student might buy, nothing fancy, just some basic transportation. I explained your situation and he said to stop in on Saturday and we’ll see what he has."

"But I don’t have any money yet, I couldn’t buy anything" Toni replied. Mr. Franklin simply assured Toni that this was something that could be worked out.

Toni was thrilled with the contents of the 2 packages. There were several dress’s, some of which were suitable for work. The only disappointment was that a few of them were too small or too short. Toni picked out one and made it ready to wear on Friday. She went to bed happy about the future prospects.

Friday began with a minor disappointment. Only after getting dressed did Toni realize the accessories she lacked: proper shoes, jewelry. Previously she had been self conscious about her casual dress as compared to the other women in the office. Now, only after getting dressed, did she realize that the flats she had did not really suit the dress and the one pair of heels were also not for daytime wear. She was learning. But Friday proved to be a good day in spite of the small disappointments. The was the compliment from Janet on how nice she looked. Then there was the full weeks paycheck. Looking at the amount only added to the realization that a car was possible.

At supper Friday evening arrangements were made to drive over to the dealership on Saturday morning. Robert came over and they watched a movie tape and had cokes and some chips. Robert informed Toni he was a bit envious. " I can’t even use my folks car until I come home for Christmas. Hopefully I’ll have my license by then"

Toni responded with " well, it’ll cost you but if you ask on bended knees I’ll give you rides,"

"Your enjoying this aren’t you"

"Sure am"

Saturday morning they drove across town to Dealership Row where they met Mr. Jackson the owner. After some pleasantries Toni was turned over to a yardman who drove her via a golf cart to back fence of the property. Toni explained she simply wanted some basic transportation that a poor college student could afford. The yard man explained that the cars back here were trade-ins too old to put on the lot. That they were wholesaled to buy-here/pay-here lots. There were several but one caught Toni’s eye. A 9 year old compact Chevy. The sides had numerous scrapes as if rubbing bushes or the garage door opening. It had automatic, an AM radio but no Air Conditioning. "Some lady traded this in. She had won some money and ‘just had to have a new car’. It started right up and Toni drove it around the lot. It only had 37,052 mile on it. "How much" she asked hesitantly.

"Lets go back to the office and see what we have in it" he told her.

Mr. Jackson came out of the office. Speaking to Mr. Franklin he said "We’ve go $650.00 in the car. I’ll run it through the shop and with tag and taxes, $725.00" Turning to Toni he asked, " How’s that sound young lady" . She gasped with excitement "That’s great but you’ll have to hold the car for a bit I.........." Mr. Franklin interrupted her. "She works for me. Fill out all the papers and send me the bill at the office. I’ll pay the bill and we’ll settle it between us." It was agreed upon. The car could be picked up Tuesday.

Toni was all excited on the way home and couldn’t thank Robert’s Father enough. "You didn’t have to do that sir. I could have waited a few weeks and saved the money and paid for it."

"No, it’s better this way. You’ll have more time to see if anything goes wrong with it. Besides since Robert can’t drive, we won’t have to run you two around. You’ll have your own transportation." Robert could only sulk in the car finally saying "Boy, girls have all the luck. Everybody wants to help them out." Toni just smiled.

At supper Toni excitedly explained all the details of the car including the dents and scratches on the sides. Robert would occasionally comment, " no air-conditioning?............only an AM radio?..........scratches, dents?......" Finally Robert’s Father said " I sure this will be very practical on campus, besides less things to fix. What do YOU want on campus, A Limo?. Take a lesson on being thrifty."

Toni wanted to celebrate buying the car and mentioned to Robert about going to the show. "I’ll even pay my own way" she said with a smirk. Mrs. Franklin then said "Next week you kids will have your own transportation and will be able to go anywhere you want."

"I can be ready in an hour" she told Robert and went back to her apt. By now she was getting used to the routine. Remove the breast forms, shower, check for leg hair. Then it was dressing: fasten the forms, put on a bra, panty, slip, panty hose. ‘Wish I had something up there so I didn’t have to wear these’ she was beginning to think. Tonight she took care with her make-up and after seeing the results decided on one of the new dressy dress’s. Then it was on with the heels. ‘Yes, heels do make a difference. I’ve got to buy some more’ she thought to herself. A brushing of the hair, some spray and she walked over to the house.

Mrs. Franklin commented on how lovely she looked. When Robert came down the stairs his comment was "Wow, you look terrific." Toni smiled in appreciation. Toni felt so good as they went into the show. She had taken Robert’s arm as they walked in. Tonight Robert was treating her more like a date and Toni was enjoying it. When they were leaving the theater they met one of Robert’s old High School buddies who was there with his date.

When they invited Robert and Toni to meet them at a restraunt, Robert had to explain about not having the car.

"Well ride with us and we’ll drop you at home after." When Robert looked at Toni she nodded yes. During the drive to the restraunt Robert and Wayne talked about school. It wasn’t until they were seated in the restraunt that Toni and Beverly got a chance to talk to one another. Beverly was a local girl who had graduated High School and gone to work in an office. Wayne was going to a small school in Indiana, Ball State, basically a teachers college. Toni then explained her relationship was that of fellow student with Robert and was here working for his Father.

"She’s really a brain, got me through the school year with good grades and my Dad hired her for the summer so she could earn good money for next year" Robert explained.

Toni was a bit startled when Beverly invited Toni to "the ladies room with me" Toni had to go and was nervous the whole time. Then Beverly sat down on the bench and lit a cigarette. "Wayne doesn’t like me to smoke in public so I come in here and smoke." She offered Toni one who simply nodded No. "You must be something special" she then said adding " I’ve known the Franklin’s for years and for them to hire you, Well..........".Toni interrupted her. "It’s only cause I helped Robert last year or he would have flunked his freshman year again"

"Well kid I envy you. You’ve got it all going for you....brains......looks You’ll probably marry Robert and get all the business’s." Toni was stunned by this statement and replied "Nah. Robert and I are just friends at school. Never happen" Toni couldn’t believe she was having a conversation like this, and in a ladies room. When they got back to the table it was Wayne who commented "Well you were in there long enough" Beverly replied, "We were just plotting what to do with you two."

When they got to Robert and Toni’s place it was Beverly who said to Toni, "Are you really staying here?" Toni quickly replied "Oh, I’m in the guest house away from the main house." Wayne looked at Robert and added "Boy have you got it made." They watched as Robert and Toni walked hand in hand up the driveway and into the breezeway. Inside Toni said, "Had a great time and your friends are nice. I think they have the wrong idea about us."

"Let them think what they want" Robert replied.

"Nite, I’m really tired ......see ya in the morning."

Toni was truly happy as she undressed and got ready for bed. So much had happened this day. There was the car, and it was a beautiful car she thought to herself. The scratch’s didn’t matter, either did the dent in the bumper. She pictured driving up to the house. Dad would be happy, it was a Chevy. He thought Chevys were the best- that’s what the truck was. Mom would say, "It looks almost new" She said that a lot about things Dad bought used. Then her thoughts shifted to the girl she had met that evening, Beverly. ‘She sounded like she was jealous of me-the job I had working for the Franklin’s, going to college. She even mentioned I had the looks. Toni looked at her reflection in the mirror, hand to her breast turning from side to side. She wasn’t seeing Tony any more, at least not that night.

Sunday began late. It was 11:00 when Toni got up. After some juice and cereal, she went in and took a bath. Relaxing in the tub Toni noticed ,for the first time, the tenderness in her chest. "Must be sore from wearing those forms" she thought. She also noticed that some pimples she would get on the upper back and on her forehead had cleared up. As she toweled herself off, she also noticed how clear and bright her face looked. "Must be from using that cold cream" she thought to herself.

Noticing Robert out by the pool, she first got her laundry started and then walked out to join him. He yelled for her to ‘come on in’ and after some hesitantance went in to change. She thought she had noticed a bathing suit among the things she had gotten from the girls. Sure enough there it was: a 1-piece that had a skirted bottom.. After slipping it on she realized she would have to wear one of the panty girdle briefs with it as without some help there was a definite bulge in the crotch. Other than that the suit looked very normal, she thought.

The pool felt great. Robert and Toni were in and out of the water, taking soda breaks and even once to have a snack Mrs. Franklin brought out. She was delighted to see the "kids having so much fun together". Toni especially enjoyed the afternoon. She had never been to anyone’s home where they had a pool. By supper they were both sporting red skin and were tired.

As Toni changed for supper she couldn’t help but notice the tan line she was developing. The red of the exposed skin contrasted with the white torso for which Toni just chuckled to herself. Boy will this be tough to explain to someone back home she thought to herself. She dressed simply for supper.

The discussion at the dinner table centered mainly about the car. Toni was reminded she would need insurance. She just replied, "well I’ll just have to wait until I get some before I can drive it"

Sunday evening was just a stay and watch TV night. Robert had made some arrangements to get together with some old friends and was mildly disappointed when Toni said she just wanted to stay at home. "Tomorrow’s a work day and I have things to get ready." Besides she had a problem she had to think about, a drivers license. When Tony had turned 16 he had gotten a provisional license. This had expired at age 18 and it had never been renewed. Not only would She have to get insurance but a license as well. Would this be any kind of problem, she wondered.

Monday and Tuesday were busy days at work. During the afternoon break Toni mentioned to Janet she was picking up a car she had purchased. As she started to explain the arrangement with Mr. Franklin, Janet interrupted her. "Mr. Franklin has already called me. We are deducting $100.00 each week from your paycheck to repay the loan. Mr. Franklin thought that would be acceptable." Toni nodded yes. When Toni mentioned about insurance and the drivers license problem, Janet offered the name of her insurance company saying that they insured her daughter when she was in school. She would inquire and give Toni information.

The car was picked up right after work. When they got to the dealership, the car was parked right out in front. Toni was just beaming when she saw it. Inside she was given the necessary papers by the woman in the office who asked Toni. "First Car?" Toni was beaming as she said "Yes." After many ‘ Thank You’s’ Toni and Robert followed Mr. Franklin home. Even Robert commented on how nice it looked. At supper Mr. Franklin told Toni the car had been run through the shop, the battery had been replaced, the brakes checked and everything else checked out. It would be over a week before Toni would be able to drive it again. There was the license and insurance matter.

With the car purchased and sitting on the driveway Toni had a new energy at work. She was now very comfortable associating with everyone and they seemed to share her excitement. Janet made an appointment with the Insurance agent to come by the office on Friday. Toni purchased the minimum required which came to only $133.00 for 6 months. The policy would go into effect as soon as Toni got her drivers license. Arrangements were made to take the test the following Wednesday.

With each passing day Toni seemed to take a greater interest in her appearance. No longer was she the simple skirt, blouse and flats summer help. She had discovered how fashionable clothing and heels resulted in compliments from co-workers. Mrs. Franklin and Robert also noticed the evolution in her appearance. She had begun to look like a ‘young lady’ as Mrs. Franklin stated. Toni also personally noted that she needed minimal make-up during the day. She also had begun to experience some discomfort while wearing the breast forms. The area under the forms seemed tender and she stopped wearing them. Instead she used cotton to fill out the cup of the bra. It seemed to be less irritating.

On Wednesday She drove the car to work alone. At noon Janet went with her to the examining station. The written test was easy, 70 to pass, she got 84. Then a quick drive around the block, a bit of a fumble on the parking test but the examiner passed her. The nervous part came when she had to present some ID There was the car registration and a school ID It was when Janet said, "This girl works for me. I can vouch for her age" that the examiner completed the license. The picture was taken and 5 minutes later Ms. Toni Summers was a Legal Driver. No one had noticed Tony on the student ID That night Toni drove home from work full of smiles.

At supper Toni thanked Mr. Franklin for everything. He replied simply that she had earned the favor. Toni then invited Robert to take a ride "somewhere, I just want to drive the car!’ As they drove around Toni could barely contain her excitement. Even the cars that honked and then roared around them because she was driving so slow didn’t phase her. They stopped at one of the local drive-in burger joints at Robert’s suggestion but Toni had just a Coke. "I’m too excited for anything."

That evening as Toni got ready for bed the events of the past 4 weeks went through her mind. "Gosh, has it been only 4 weeks?" she pondered. So much has happened. A car was only in her dreams. There had been thoughts about a part-time job during the next school year. Yet here it was, 3 weeks into the summer vacation and the car on the drive was hers. And here was Tony, now Toni the girl, living and working as a girl. She looked at herself in the mirror. "It’s like I don’t see Tony anymore, the girl there is me. Yes, that girl in the mirror is me. Maybe the girls were right. Why did this happen so easily?" Toni looked at the breast form laying on the end of the vanity. I almost wish I had real breasts she said softly.

Toni continued to ride to and from with Robert and Mr. Franklin. Her spirits were high and especially on Friday. One of the women at work had told Toni about a consignment shop and she was planning to go on Saturday. Even with the loan deduction, her pay was still sizable, at least to her, and she had decided to spend some money on some additional clothes. Friday afternoon Toni received a call from Robert. Now that she had the car, he was asking her for a date. Toni was stunned but replied and said "That would be great Robert. Dinner and a Show? Yes."

As she got ready for Robert’s arrival, she looked at her hair. It had grown out enough that the brown roots were over an inch long. She would have to have it colored. Maybe I can get it done tomorrow, she thought. She decided to wear the same dress as she had worn at the school party. And Yes, the heels. She took care with her make-up. After 4 weeks she had become an expert with eye liner and shadow. Tonight the red,red lipstick and nail polish. She felt good in the dress and heels. Somehow the dress felt different- it was tighter, that was it. Must have put on weight. Perfume, must put on perfume!

Robert knocked. She opened the door. "God you look beautiful."

"Thank you. I tried"

Dinner was a dream for Toni. They had driven into the city and ate in a roof top restraunt. The view was beautiful. Robert was treating Toni as any date would treat a lovely companion. The movie was a bit scary and Toni grabbed Robert’s arm several times. But it was when they arrived back at the house that Toni was to experience the joy of being a girl for the first time in earnest.

"Robert, I had a wonderful time"

"So did I" Robert took Toni’s hands and pulled her close. He put his arms around her, pulled her close and kissed her on the lip. Toni found herself kissing Robert in return. She felt a warm glow. Then even through the cotton in the bra cups she felt Robert’s hands. "Lets go inside............"
